The Joy of Giving 6.9.21

I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.” (Luke 18:29–30).

There are some who teach this verse means if you give your material wealth to God He will give material wealth multiplied back to you. If this is our motivation for giving we are NOT giving to the Lord, we are trying to find a way to get more for ourselves.

Jesus says when we give to God we don't lose anything. The more we are devoted to Him the more we find life as it was meant to be lived. Things fall into place. We learn the joy of generosity. There is a satisfaction and blessing that comes from having our priorities straight. Yes, the Lord does provide for us materially. But, what we receive in response to our giving to the Lord is first and foremost a deeper relationship with Him. That blessing far exceeds anything this world has to offer.

Think of how you feel when you give your kids a Christmas present they have greatly desired or the joy of giving your spouse an unexpected gift. You don't expect anything in return but you don't feel diminished . . . you are filled with joy! When we give to the Lord with the right heart, we find it is the most satisfying thing we can do.
