The Direct Route 1.12.22
“Normally it takes only eleven days to travel from Mount Sinai* to Kadesh-barnea, going by way of Mount Seir. But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month,* Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the LORD had commanded him to say.” (Deuteronomy 1:2-3)
It is easy to forget the reason Israel spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. It was not because God was lost.
After Israel left Egypt they spent some time in Sinai as God gave them the Law (think of it as hammering out a Constitution for this new nation.) They were at the Promised Land quickly after this.
The people wanted to send spies into the land. Hopefully, you remember that these spies said it would be too hard to defeat the inhabitants of the land. Even though God was with them, they would not move forward as He instructed. As a result, they wandered in the wilderness until that entire generation had died.
There is an application here for us: the sooner we do what God tells us to do, the sooner we will find the life abundant that we crave. We can wander, or we can trust. It really is that simple.
